It sounds great and I had a chance to use an original in the early 90's but my nostalgia for it is minimal and even if Behringer clones it for $2 it's not like I have the fucking space for it despite having a larger studio than I used to.

What i'd like is a clone of the digitech time machine but with 24 bit sampling.. always loved it's control layout and haven't really found something with higher quality audio that works quite the same where you can modulate the playback speed and do insert edits at the same time.

That's a good question.. it's not illegal to reverse engineer electronics.. the biggest problem is really trademark infringement.. Like you certainly can't brand it KORG if it's not made by KORG .. apparently it's grey territory if the device generally looks like the original. Also you can copy a schematic as long it doesn't visually look like the original.

I guess I don't have a problem with cloning of devices that otherwise would never be remade by the original designer but it seems pretty shitty in examples of devices where the original manufacturers are still around and aren't getting royalties. I dunno.. it doesn't help that I think Uli is a douche nozzle.

China "for some reason" is above any copyright laws & most any international laws, thus they will "pirate" anything/everything...

I read this actual printed book about Piracy a couple of years ago that made some interesting observations about that. It's been argued many times that IP protections stifle innovation.. so being that China is the global hub of electronics manufacturing that fact that they ignore copyright has accelerated their manufacturing abilities that all the tech companies ultimately benefit from. Microsoft may bitch about crack copies of Windows in China but China churning out newer cheaper PC's for export certainly leads to purchases of valid Windows licenses.

Also in that vein you get bizarro products because the tech is so common and modular that you can slap it together in whatever configuration suit a particular market like a cellphone that is also an electric razor or a cellphone with a huge ass battery that can charge multiple devices and has 6 id chips.. for places where power is intermittent and 491 scams are common.

Certainly not on topic. And given Adrian's point about sometimes the copying of stuff can be commercially good... Gates famously condemned illegal software, but added he wanted it to be Microsoft!

Doesn't the same idea hold for individuals illegal downloads of sounds and software. Which of course no one here does...

No Behringer fan, but I did have about 8 of his guitar pedals, which surprising I resold on ebay. All cheap, some useless, but not everyone can afford Boss.

My current funny habit is buying cheap smart phones, at around 30 ukp do everything most ones costs 100+ more. And why is an Apple iPhone over 1000? Status and massive profits.

I've also got some Diesel watch copies from Hong Kong @ 7.00 ukp. " of which tell the time.

I think I would rather spend xc2xa33000+ on building a modular synth of my own.

But it looks a tasty bit of kit for sure, just not within my grasp.

Behringer's cloning activities are nothing to do with China's lax attitudes to copyright (and even less to do with weird propaganda about organ harvesting or whatever...), It simply IS legal to copy circuits in this way after patents have expired or whatever. Most of the 'good' synth companies also base their stuff on a few basic circuits invented by other companies anyway. And get their gear manufactured with the same china/taiwan technology + factories for that matter.

So long as you don't copy the actual artwork of the PCB directly or copy trademarked design elements on the outside of the synth there's actually nothing wrong legally speaking with what they are doing. And when they have overstepped the mark they got taken to court, ie they had to redesign the look of the 1st wave of fx pedals because they looked too similar to the Boss originals

they can be pretty shady tho, and they have hypocritically threatened other companies with legal action over various stuff
