What the actual fuck is going on here?
He returns!

I'd wager a guess that the coiled needle(?) is meant to be dragged across the resonant surface of the drum skin, the vibrations of which are then picked up by the piezo disc attached to the thorny tree branch.
I doubt said thorny tree branch has any impact on the sound––i.e. it was chosen for the utilitarian purpose of being a stick-like object––though it's interesting to note I can't see any wires leading to or from it, so who knows where the piezo disc's signal is being outputted to.
Nicely analyzed! To clarify, the "coiled needle" is a cutting from the edge of some sheet steel in order to true up the angle before I slice them into box blanks (which I want to have square angles). Less of a needle and more of a barb.

With respect to cable management, I hollowed out the blackberry cane I used as the arm, and ran the wire inside. I did "cheap out" on the end of the cable by just slapping a 1/4" plug on the end of some cable (as opposed to engineer some neat and tidy plug mount at the base of the stalk).

Those pics were from before finishing the build. But yeah, it's just a contact microphone. The barb end is sort of spring loaded and bounces around if I let it. Kind of fun but pretty two dimensional sonically, it has a thick accent if you will.

Nice to see you're still above ground!
When in doubt, add resistance.

What we have here is the firmware that will enable my Akai VX90 to respond to parameter changes from external MIDI commands.

It might not look much to you, but it is a massive step forward for me.

Boogie D-180, '80-'82 era.
Mighty fine bass amp. They will get your attention.
These beasts make mighty fine guitar amps with a few tweeks.

This example featured modifications to the front end and
inverter. The 12ax7 preamp section was fully removed and replaced
in favor of octal preamp and inverter tubes.
