Blackstar HT Pedals

Post by Soloman Tump »

Ok so I bought one of these 22v pedals off ebay last year. It worked well for a few weeks, really great reverb sounds. Sounded awesome with a kick drum.

Didn't realise how hot they ran - the valve inside obviously doing its job. Took about 10-15 minutes to warm up properly.

But then one day it stopped suddenly. The valve now just flickers - a quick orange flickering, no sound output at all, it won't even pass a dry signal through the device. The manual says no user serviceable parts and it has to go back to either Blackstar or one of their recommended service partners. Waiting for a quote on how much it will cost to repair.... if its the tube that needs replacing then fair enough, I purchased 2nd hand so it was my gamble....

Anyone got any experience with these pedals?

Don't really fancy poking around inside too much as it operates at 300v and I don't trust my electrical skills to be able to diagnose and fix whatever is borked.

If its more than xc2xa340 - 50 to repair then ill probably cut my losses....

did some fast research....
UPDATE
I did some further web research and found that there is a known issue with a certain generation of the HT5 board where R38 and/or R39 burnout due to a short on the board. The fix involves replacing the resistors and drilling the board to reduce the likelihood of the short reoccurring. I looked inside and sure enough, R38 is burned and has melted solder. I talked to the guy at the local shop, and he guessed the tech they send amps to would likely charge around $80 to diagnose it, which would probably be 90% of the repair. Then it would be a little more to fix and buy the parts. So I'm thinking $80-100 to get it fixed. I initially paid $280 to buy it new old-stock; when Sam Ash was blowing out the non-reverb versions of the amp. I like it, but I don't 'need' it. I'm on the fence, it was cheap, but it's not a bad knock around amp. There are tons of good, cheap amps out there too if I wanted something else. I have a Vox Cambridge 15 and an Orange TH30 Combo at home, so I do have amps to use. I could imagine I could sell it for $150-200 to someone that repairs amps, they could fix it for $3 on a rainy Sunday and make out with a nice amp to keep or resell. What's the consensus on when it's worth repairing an amp?

They're cheaply built and have had a number of issues, mostly heat related frying some resistors or other components, or heating in parts enough that some components have unsoldered themselves.

Yeah, I guess it looks like my eBay bargain wasn't really a bargain. Will update when I get a quote back!
