XronoMorph: Loop generator

XronoMorph is a free macOS and Windows app for creating multilayered rhythmic and melodic loops (hockets). Each rhythmic layer is visualized as a polygon inscribed in a circle, and each polygon can be constructed according to two different mathematical principles: perfect balance and well-formedness (aka MOS). These principles generalize polyrhythms, additive, and Euclidean rhythms. Furthermore, rhythms can be smoothly morphed between, and irrational rhythms with no regular pulse can also be easily constructed.

XronoMorph subsumes the earlier MeanTimes app described in Milne, A. J. and Dean, R. T. (2016).

Each polygon can play an independent sound, and XronoMorph comes with a useful selection of samples to play the rhythms. Alternatively, you can load your own VST or AU plugins, or send MIDI to an external software or hardware synth. The rhythmic loops can be saved as presets within XronoMorph; they can also be saved as Scala scale tuning files, which means XronoMorph can be used as a tool for designing well-formed (MOS) and perfectly balanced microtonal scales.

Perfectly balanced and well-formed rhythms

The mathematical principles utilized by XronoMorph are perfect balance and well-formedness (MOS).

Perfect balance is a generalization of the polyrhythms found in many African and jazz musical traditions. A rhythm is perfectly balanced when the mean position (centre of gravity) of all its rhythmic events, when arranged on a circle, is the centre of that circle.

Well-formedness is a generalization of the additive rhythms found in aksak (Balkan), sub-Saharan African, and progressive rock musical traditions. Well-formed rhythms contain no more than two interonset intervals, arranged as evenly as possible. WF rhythm are typically nested by faster WF rhythms, which in combination form complex interlocking rhythmic hierarchies.

XronoMorph is a portable standalone application distributed in a zip file. No installation is requiredxe2x80x94when you have downloaded the file, unzip it and double click to run.

Possible issues on OS X/macOS:

On first run, you may need to right-click (control-click) the app and select 'Open'.

Possible issues on Windows:

If you get a message complaining of missing dlls (e.g., MSVCP120.dll) you will need to install the Visual C++ Redistributable Package for Visual Studio 2013 from Microsoft's Download Center.

Known bugs:

VST/AU plugins are not stored in presets (this should be fixed very soon).

Here is a method learned while ago for recording VSTi midi output directly for DAW piano roll so it can be saved/edited/exported:

loopMIDI

Virtual loopback MIDI cable for Windows 7 up to Windows 10, 32 and 64 bit.

This software can be used to create virtual loopback MIDI-ports to interconnect applications on Windows that want to open hardware-MIDI-ports for communication.

The ports created are unique for each user and only exist while the loopMIDI-application is running. So if you log-off, the created ports cease to exist.

When you close the configuration, the application will not terminate, but rather be minimized to the traybar. When you right-click on the traybar-icon of loopMIDI, you get an options-menu to either deactivate the application, configure the ports or to activate autostart each time you log on to the computer.

This software uses the virtualMIDI driver to actually create the ports.

TNT is a Distortion/Saturation plugin.

TNT was originally created for audio processing on drums (individual sounds and loops), FX and bass sounds.

TNT comes in 2 flavours: single band and multi-band. Both have mono and stereo components so we are talking about a total of 4 VST plugins. Both share the same saturation/distortion algorithms but the single band features a Tone knob that is not present in the multi-band version.

This later features a transparent 6dB crossover filter that separates the low and high bands where you can use different saturation/distortion algorithms on each band. There is also a balance knob that helps to level both bands before final output.

Modifier keys: Shift (fine tuning) and Control (default value).
Clear, intuitive, easy to use GUI.

DIY Layout Creator

DIY Layout Creator (DIYLC in short) is freeware drawing tool developed with help of a large online community of DIY electronics enthusiasts. It incorporates many ideas that came from people using older versions of the application. The goal is to provide a simple interface and enough power to let the user draw schematics, board/chassis layouts and guitar wiring diagrams quickly and without a steep learning curve. Also, it is build around the flexible open source framework that may be used to draw pretty much anything. Below is a sample board layout drawn in DIYLC3.

The latest and greatest multi-platform Java version. Works on Windows, Linux, MacOSxe2x80xa6anything that can run Java JRE. Mostly backwards compatible with the previous two versions and offers better performance, improved stability and higher flexibility due to the open source API. Multi-platform Java version. At this point, I would NOT encourage anyone to download or use 2.x beta because itxe2x80x99s just too buggy and slow compared to 3.x. Once I add all the components into 3.x, version 2.x will be officially retired.

The very first version of DIYLC, written in Delphi and runs only on Windows. At this time I do not support or update this version, itxe2x80x99s been almost a decade since I last played with it. You can still find a bunch of layouts online drawn with this version of the software. Itxe2x80x99s pretty easy to use and can draw smaller PCBs, Perfboards or Stripboards quickly. It has simple yet very effective interface which makes job much easier. Placing a component on board takes only 2-3 mouse clicks. You need to click on source and destination hole and program will place component between them. Placing polarized components is the same, but then you need to take care about hole order because program takes source hole for positive and destination hole for negative side. Itxe2x80x99s similar with IC: pin 1 goes in source hole and last pin goes to destination hole. When working with PCB layouts you can set width of each trace and solder pad! Also, therexe2x80x99s xe2x80x9cPrint PnPxe2x80x9d which gives printout ready for transfer on blank board (laser printer required). However, itxe2x80x99s not very flexible and itxe2x80x99s written poorly, I keep it here because itxe2x80x99s kind of retro cool, but I donxe2x80x99t use it anymore these days.
