Non Electronic Gear
Yes this will have a contact Mic and yes the fan is electric but this is the type of gear I'm talking about.
Drums and percussion like shopping carts gas cans and large metal drums
'shaker' boxes
Non musical electric devices like drills grinders and jack hammers.
Odd items you may use amplified
Basically almost anything not a pedal or synth
Think...Zev
Metal milk crate with large spring and vintage metal blade fan.
With roofing ax
Was thinking of attaching the fan to the cage and moving the spring but I like the randomness of the fan being loose also.
Yes I will be wearing heavy leather gloves when performing...maybe.
The idea of running some meat through the fan or some glitter confetti has crossed my mind.

Re: Non Electronic Gear
The spring cage with fan videos sound good. If I listen to the videos without watching, I can't quite guess how these sounds are being made.
These remind me of some videos posted by irr. app. (ext.) on YouTube a few years ago:

Re: Non Electronic Gear
Music boxes in metal can with vintage telephone speaker mouthpiece mounted in metal can mic and distortion pedal.
This needs reverb delay Looper and all that...just wanted to see if it would work
Music boxes on guitar.

Metal pepper can with spring.
This didn't hold so well...needed some washers where the spring was attached.
The Mic is a vintage ear piece....

Re: Non Electronic Gear
Vex Bell test...going to add metal chain maybe and will have two of these.
The length of chain or rope is something I need to think about.
Longer allows for more dramatic effects but less control.
The sound live is of course much more dynamic aka really fucking obnoxious.

Re: Non Electronic Gear
Does electrical gear fit into this category? I mean, I'm assuming that electronic capture and reproduction down the line is allowed.
Example: power tools as applied to a medium, say sheet metal. That would classify a non-electronic source, yes?
I think most of my interest in this arena is at the transducer, which would enter an electronic domain (say, a string of fuzz pedals) pretty quickly. Though that could also be played acoustically, so I imagine it would count too?
Tying a plastic bucket to the bumper of a car, at least that's wholesome.

I wasn't sure how to tag this thread...crochambeau wrote: ↑Tue Jan 07, 2020 11:33 am Does electrical gear fit into this category? I mean, I'm assuming that electronic capture and reproduction down the line is allowed.

But of course drills and grinders and pneumatic steam hydrolic internal combustion of all manner
basically anything NOT a synth or pedal
Near anything dragged behind a car is great for noise and fun purposes.

Re: Non Electronic Gear
Old build reposted for posterity. Long piece of salvaged metal (from a light fixture I think?) with various springs, door stoppers, a bell made partially from an old candlestick holder, and other noisemakers. There's a footswitch at either end that toggles between a contact mic and input->output. The pics don't do it justice: for one, it's about 5ft. tall in person. I also put on a small wheel and more springs that aren't pictured here.
How would Victorian synths fit in to the "non-electric" canon? Of course they can't function without electricity, but the choice of probes IMO is just as important as they're really what determine the timbre of the sound e.g. two piece of tin foil rubbed together will sound totally different from two small springs or two paperclips.
