Could be a lot of things.

I wholly support the notion of taking it apart and setting eyes on it.

Could be a PNP based circuit built in the way of placing Vcc on the shell instead of common.

Could be a lot of things.

So I took the back off and had a play around. Tightened up the in/out ports which were working loose.

On the pcb there was a 3 pronged "thing" that was very loose in a row of 5 terminals. I wiggled it about and made it s tighter fit. Hey presto, awful humming noise gone and it's back to being a fugly fuzz pedal as intended. Not sure what it was or why it worked but it has. Job done.

Three legged thing sounds like a possible transistor, and those SIL sockets are popular with some builders because it allows them to try out different parts and fine tune things.

You have already discovered the downside of friction fit build methods.

Congrats on getting it sorted!

Oh wow, I do not remember uploading that pic. That is a re-house of those old EH boxes that had a male phone plug on one end and a female on the other, so you could hang a Jenga stack of "pedals" directly off your guitar in a hilariously "not firm on physics" manner.

There was an LBP-1 and a Muff Fuzz circuit in that box. Someone had pulled the Muff Fuzz prior to my ending up with it. I got it from an old friend who wound up swallowing a 9mm around the turn of the century.

I can't remember where I got that image. Maybe this thread.....??

Fart huffing Germanium snobs just stop. Please.
A Muff Fuzz and an LPB-1 hanging from my Hondo
was pure cash at 14 years of age.

My condolences, I hope your friend found peace.

Yeah, that pic was indeed in this thread. I'd just forgotten about it, hahaha.

I agree that silicon absolutely has a place in the realm of fuzz. Germanium is fun, silicon is fun, hell, opamps are fun and digital converters are fun. Magnetic fields are fun.

Everything carves its own space, and there are absolutely more vistas than have been explored so far. The pedestrian habit of gilding the lily of ground already trod upon is an affront to art. But whatever, even mindless consumerism is fun.

I'm in the midst of designing a circuit that will probably really sit right inside the domain of fuzz. More fun for everyone!
