Honestly, it will depend on the sources. As you probably know/remember xdugef and I went on a friendly spar with regards to the usage of Y cables many moons ago on noiseguide. Connecting your outputs directly is essentially using a Y cable, and yes - sometimes it works.
I have certain builds that malfunction when applied into a Y cable scenario though, so, I typically resist its use in all of my endeavors (I'll employ one to split a signal now and then, but not on any customer builds). Here is how I deal with summing multiple sections:

The information inside the red circle is the important part (you do not need actives, I just happen to use them). Resistances can be anything, but equal values are typically best. I think my aforementioned issue described above can be solved with loads as small as ~ 100 ohms, but I often have volume controls on the "input" side, and that means a small resistance can drag the other "channels" down when the volume on one is all the way down (and the pot is set up with the wiper as "output") and 10K seems to wurk* out in all my applications.
