I'd also start by confirming what taper is giving you grief, it may be that you are using a log already and a linear would stretch that sweet spot out a bit.

Impossible to know by words alone, you've got to measure and confirm what you have and go from there.
When in doubt, add resistance.

CROCHAMBEAU, I SUMMON THEE!

Ixe2x80x99m building something where I want to have the option to combine the outputs of three devices into one output, where this one output puts out a signal that is combination of all three devicesxe2x80x99 output signals, with none of the three original signals overpowering the others [all else equal]
Can I simply connect the output leads of the three devices to one combined output, or do I need to include some other circuit or component(s) to make sure everything is balanced out?
If it helps, the three devices are exactly the same, So itxe2x80x99s unlikely there will be any impedance matching or power issues.

Honestly, it will depend on the sources. As you probably know/remember xdugef and I went on a friendly spar with regards to the usage of Y cables many moons ago on noiseguide. Connecting your outputs directly is essentially using a Y cable, and yes - sometimes it works.

I have certain builds that malfunction when applied into a Y cable scenario though, so, I typically resist its use in all of my endeavors (I'll employ one to split a signal now and then, but not on any customer builds). Here is how I deal with summing multiple sections:

The information inside the red circle is the important part (you do not need actives, I just happen to use them). Resistances can be anything, but equal values are typically best. I think my aforementioned issue described above can be solved with loads as small as ~ 100 ohms, but I often have volume controls on the "input" side, and that means a small resistance can drag the other "channels" down when the volume on one is all the way down (and the pot is set up with the wiper as "output") and 10K seems to wurk* out in all my applications.

*(do we really need a forced emoji for the word "w o r k"?)
When in doubt, add resistance.

You can avoid the automatic emoji issue by inserting unused bbcode like this:

Code: Select all

 wo[i][b][/b][/i]rk
Or simply check the xe2x80x9cDisable BBCodexe2x80x9d box underneath the xe2x80x9cOptionsxe2x80x9d before submitting your post (right next to xe2x80x9cAttachmentsxe2x80x9d tab).

Though I do agree the word xe2x80x9cworkxe2x80x9d is far too common to be code for an emoji. Itxe2x80x99s not the only one either.
