Goddamnit, All Electronics Is Closing

Post by Indeterminacy »

This needs it's own thread:
NoiseWiki wrote: Sun Jul 16, 2023 9:00 pm I just heard that All Electronics is going out of business .. its the closet thing to Science Center here in LA. I still have items I bought at the SC in Chicsgo in the early 90s.

Fortunately Apex surplus is still going and has cleaned up although they are more geared towards prop rentals these days. I still bought as much as I vould last time I was there... I had to haggle with them for the privilege to buy a shipping cannister emblazoned with DO NOT DESTROY that I'm currently using as a trash can

Fucking death knells. I remember with sadness when Northwest Electronics Surplus (the Eugene, Oregon local shop) went under, twice. Was a memorable dumpster diving event the second time through, but man, no joy would have matched seeing the place continue to thrive.

I hope the local enthusiasts are able enough to salvage the wreck into existing collections, it's a bummer seeing or hearing about this sort of thing literally tipped into a container and sold for scrap/metal harvesting.

I guess the gravy train of surplus is running put.. I can't regret all my splurges at these places but I regret that I haven't been able to do much with the stuff other than hoard it..

my storage place wants to increase my rent %34 so I may have to shed some of the stuff .. well see what happens

This heavily motivated my slowing down of acquisition. I'm pushing myself to process what I've got - repair/restore/reuse, that sort of thing. There are some whiz bang things on the horizon that pull my attention springs for sure, but unless something gets planted right in front of me my blinders are doing good work maintaining the sliver of freed up I have managed to hang on to.

It's like we're snags in a river of gear. It piles up, forming a temporary island - somehow inherently accruing more the larger it gets. Then, in time, the current reclaims a chunk and the march of time moves on. I'd rather be the architect of that erosion than the victim of sublimation through exhaustion.

Good luck on ousting the storage unit! May you streamline to the important shit and discover local like minded individuals to take care of the rest.

Honestly, the gravy train of surplus has been drying up since the 20th Century. DIY is a solid long game.

Can never shake the love of tools.
