Forum thread rating system

What is the function behind the percentage/five star rating of threads?

I see single post threads that reflect an 11% approval rating (?!) and reflect a 50% approval on the post itself (?!). Is visibility of this function important, and if so, can we as users have a more streamlined interface for participation (unless automated (?!))? What the fuck is going on here?!

(insert image of grandpa shaking fist at cloud)

I see it as a potential vehicle for slagging on other people, which sort of contributed (my opinion) to the downfall of Noiseguide, et al., so, what gives?

I've been wondering about the actual rating.. just I kinda "like" it as a way acknowledge that you read a post. Unfortunately there aren't many options to it.. there is another extension sorta like it but I'm not sure how well it is supported

I like the likes or whathaveyou.

I really do hope we dont know people so low and lame to use something like that for neferious purposes...if so I hope they never met me in real life. I'll act a fool. I'll find your moms address and seduce her and make her disown you then ill dump her after selling everything in her home.

I like the likes too, and it reflects well on the avatar pane. I have not groked the mathematics on how those relate to general thread rating, but knowing that they are interrelated has done much to soothe my what-the-fuckness.
