The strangest thing I find is how you refer to this entity as "imaginary", you already acknowledge that they are not real.

If you referred by name then it would be a bit easier (from my point of view) to understand the psychosis.

This is in part because I setup a word substitution so the name gets replaced with imaginary friend .. he knows this and proceeds anyway

but I have questions about how much this IF (imaginary friend) is an actual psychosis and how much IF is just a habit or some sort of (in)security blanket.
Is it just something to think and talk about instead of something new or more productive or more scary.
I dunno but I find it both annoying and interestingly amusing(if that's the right word).
