Jazz talk videos and sounds.

Look at that sax...LOOK AT IT!....wow

This is the first sun ra song I ever heard.
I absolutely love this song.
I may have had a different version?
I do know this will fuck up goofballs on acid. Good fun

Miroslav Vitous - Freedom Jazz Dance
Take a 19yo and put him with essentially Miles' - Bitches Brew band.
For his first album.

It is a great feeling when you get a deal like that at a thrift store!

Anyone down with Sun Ra?
He was in at the beginning of the Swing Era and pressed his own disks. He also had a fashion sense that kept up with the "Glitter Era" and starred in a Blacksploitation film that featured his music?
He is a one man under served neighborhood in the Jazz world. There seemed to be an agreement in the jazz press to Never Ever review Sun Ra, or any of his records.
It seemed to me that for someone that was productive, spoke the jazz language and persistent. He was systematically ignored.
I like what he did.

sun ra - definitely! i went through the whole discography exactly 12 years ago. believably almost whole, with sun ra you never know. most was not really enjoyable, just noise, no raisins. however i still have 60 albums, of those at least two dozens are excellent, the perfect line between great melodic jazz and cosmic avantgarde. for me personally the incountable versions of the discipline track is the first association. after sun ra went back to saturn, the arkestra does not impress. it is certainly good and i even would want to see them live, but all the catchiness is gone with the leader. the merzbow collab was nice though.

to add something to the topic - i also went through the whole miles davis discography around same time as with sun ra. before 1966ish it was certainly good music on the highest level in the niche, but not for me. period until the end of 70's was pure psychedelic gold, of course the bitches brew.. i'm not original in this regard. and then came downward spiral, which got especially painful with the plastic sound of the 80's at the end of his life. cocaine and alcohol fucks up even the music.
