I think in terms of noise, its more about intent rather than standing there doing the turning.
In a live environment, the physical interaction is part of the performance.

You could stand anyone in front of a bunch of pedals and let them loose for 12 minutes, but for me seeing someone actively engage (and enjoy?) with what they are doing is the main thing. Sweating, fist pumping, screaming off mic, enjoy the creation, have a good time, then so will I.

Same can be said for bands and DJs. If they look bored and don't engage with an audience then I will quickly lose interest. A technically shite DJ can still keep me interested if they are playing good tunes that they are also enjoying.

Back when Boyd Rice was relevant he didn't want to be visible when performing but thought the audience needed something to look at so he put a scarecrow on stage
