Whitehouse live in Kansas City 1984
They actually pissed people off...underground punk and art people.
People who came to see the opening act
William S Burroughs.
They were gonna play KC again but got death threats and threats of violence if they played.

Jliat can research this if he wants :P
But there are reviews online somewhere with a few pics and a recording of the show was released.

Its a matter of actually wanting to offend people not just do some art project.
Its ok if some artist does piss and shit play and its safe in a gallert...but GG does some shit play in some punk dive and then its not art but actually dangerous...and...well thats not cool.

Fashion.

Burroughs fans and punks and artists were offended by Whitehouse at the time.
Pretty sure the reactionary right would have also been offended.

PE Tip#1 Be unfashionable

Personal note...I don't or rather can't care about all this fashion and style.
I like some of it but...ah...ill let some heavy metal musician worry about it.
If I happen to do something that seems PE related....well yeah...but its just Noise with vocals and not really PE. And the term PE just reminds me of gym class aka physical education aka PE...it reminds me of naked boys , basketball and being bored...perfect for some PE project I'm sure but not really things I'm into...

PE = naked boys

Yes, people generally tend to listen to music they like and not listen to music they do not like. So people who listen to PE usually enjoy PE. This is hardly anything new.
This fact could be used to argue that the provocation never worked. But it can not be used to argue that the provocation no longer works, i.e. used to wxd0xberk at some point before.
I'm con-fused. Back in the 80s the younger audiences were at odds with the establishment, so when PE bands used stuff that was the antipathy of that establishments alleged values , child porn, Nazismxe2x80xa6 they thought - cool.

So how are you going to, as a young person, now provoke the establishments values. Liberalism. Difficult. Use images and stuff by 60 year olds?

Nah!

Join some fundamentalist group might do, but mean it.

In Lisa Carver's book there's an episode where she and Costes play a show to a bunch of rednecks. AFAIR, it ended in the audience burning all the band's stuff :)

Edited my post.

The 80s were nuts...PMRC(al gores wife) Just say no DARE the moral majority
MADD all sorts of reactionary nonsense from the main stream left and right.

PE was offensive in the 1980s and 90s...noise was offensive....at least in Kansas city middle America.

No Nazism and pedophilia was never seen as cool in the 1980s or 1990s..that's an ignorant 1960s and 70s thing...pedophilia....
The nutsy thing was only really cool with the most underground dangerous freaks and criminals and never popular.

Edit Ww2 and nutsy was popular...hogans heroes rat patrol and dayglo aluminum nutsy helmets for sale in the back of comic books.
Not popular as a serious thing...actual nazis being seen as nuts.

Uh.. no what I mean is that PE has limited exposure so it's rare that there is a major outcry about it and the general public is not likely to be exposed to it like they would to rock or other mainstream genres.

But what I was saying about black metal is that previously the shock factor in pe may have been simply that but attracted fans of black metal many of which i think could be argued are genuine racists.

I think its clear that Black Metal had / has racists as well as anti-Christian leanings, and a strong affinity with pagan / local gods in Scandinavia. The link there, by similarities to nutsy traits I think is obvious.

So we had a situation in PE and Industrial where nutsy imaginary was used to upset an establishment, which for some NON, may have become genuine, and in the case of Black Metal / PE is clearly extreme right wing nationalism ( Varg Vikernes.. Allgermanische Heidnische Front (AHF) et. a l).
