Christmas Noise and more

This type of music tends to challenge the distinction that is made in conventional musical practices between musical and non-musical sound.

This is an old Noise comp I was a part of. It was the third in a series organized through Reddit (r/noisecomps is the sub), I also did the second one for what I think was my first ever legitimately released noise track. We tried to do a fourth one last year, but there was so little interest that it just ended up as a split between me and the one other artist who submitted. Not linking that one because it was basically all drone plus one track of noisecore from one of my solo aliases.

Even if you took a few years and learned all the chords you'd still have a limited number of options. If you ignore the chords your options are infinite and you can master guitar playing in one day. - David Fair

The collab interlude track I did with my friend on drums is one of my favorite recordings to this day, despite how primitive it is. The track I did solo was so rough; it's literally three tracks in Audacity, laden with 2-3 passes of the stock reverb, recorded with the bass big muff, bass guitar, and noise box that comprised all of my gear at the time. I had to record it in my grandmother's basement living space because my brother whined about the noise when I played upstairs, so I just set up my shitty practice amp and tried to finish it as fast as possible. All into a cheap USB mic I may not have even set up properly. You can hear the strings on the noise box rattling in the background of one track, and the bass had some janky preparation because Sonic Youth were among the few noisy names I had heard of (I had heard very little Sonic Youth at that point in time, but I immediately adored their prepared guitar practices).

Goddamn that recording is a time capsule for me.

The annual Christmas is Not Your Friend compilation is going to drop in a couple of days, put out by the blog Culture is Not Your Friend!. They took last year off from this comp, but I'm glad they're back. Every year, they invite a plethora of artists to contribute pretty much anything they want. Styles are often noisy, freeform, experimental, or ambient, but they're always interesting. I've been on just about all of them with varying types of sounds of varying quality and style.

Here's the last one they put out in 2018:

Also, ThisMachineKillsMusic has been doing an "Avant Calendar" where she picks out a random noise album to listen to, then gives her review. Each video groups several days together:
