Noise Lore

This type of music tends to challenge the distinction that is made in conventional musical practices between musical and non-musical sound.

I forget the ladies name but I recall insulting her but forget why.
My insult was something like...shove your damn baby back where it came from and something about maybe keeping the kid in trash bag and these two images...
That's her kids head on GG Allin

Rrron took more offense than the lady did and banned me...so this was during the Rrron era of troniks or I heart noise or whatever it was called.

I still think this is a hilarious idea...

Sinmantyx. It all started because she had a very close picture of her tit breast-feeding her baby, which I took, put "not sinmantyx" in hard to see text, and used it as my own avatar. She got pissy with me, and cried to RRRon, he did nothing, and the whole thing was a shitshow with me pretending to be her and people pretending they were confused by it and not knowing who was who. It was all really stupid and childish, and I actually really liked her up to that point, we got on fairly well.

Alright lads, harsh text wall incoming: I've got some tales to tell. I'm sure they pale in
comparison to the overall "canon" of noise, but they're probably the
craziest experiences I have ever directly taken part in.

As some of you may know,
I did a solo live
show as FAP in 2015
, but perhaps lesser known are the two
collaborative sets I did with 10564: you may recall her as mdr10564 on
NoiseGuide, or by her old project Durik The Temptress. For the sake of
brevity, I'll be referring to her as JR throughout the rest of this
post.

Now before I begin, I want to state upfront that I hold no ill will
towards JR: these shows were crazy and stupid and I wouldn't trade it
for anything in the world. But she clearly had a message she wanted to
convey with these shows, whereas I was just in it for noise's sake. JR
is a trans woman, which may or may not become relevant later, and
while I'm totally cool with the whole trans movement and support her
identity, I obviously don't have the same strong feelings about it as
she does.

Let's start with the first show: September 29th, 2015. JR either had
no car or no access to one, so it was agreed that I'd be the driver.
Before even getting to the show, I notice an abandoned steel bedframe
by the side of the road. It had a lot of springs and looked rusty as
hell. So me, being the genius I am (and probably influenced by the
excitement of the show), decides right then and there to pick it up
for future noise experiments. Never mind I'm literally three minutes
away from home and could easily drop it off and continue my journey,
no, let's bring it along!

I roll up to JR sitting on the curb outside of her house and we're
both pretty excited. I need to mention now that I thought my gear for
the evening might have been overkill; IIRC it roughly took up the
space of one of my back seats. Once JR was done loading her gear, the
other seat and then some was stuffed with gear. Some highlights of
JR's gear include a sledgehammer and a steel chain... remember that
for later. And then there was that fucking spring bed.

Then JR goes, "oh shit, I almost forgot!" (I'm paraphrasing here but
you get the idea) She goes back into her garage and rolls out with a
full Marshall stack... I think that's what they call it? I'm not
knowledgeable about amps at all (I used the PA at the venue): all I
know is it was probably 5ft. tall at least and weighed a ton.

Then she forgets something else, goes back into the garage, and comes
out with something that looks like a painting wrapped in a body bag,
and I'm thinking what the fuck is that? Turns out it was a full
length mirror.

"I'm gonna smash it with the sledgehammer," she said (again,
paraphrasing here). I knew then it was going to be an interesting
night to say the least. Of course the thing cracks immediately upon
trying to maneuver it into the trunk, given the limited room we had
with the amp already in there. We thought, fuck it, the damage was
minimal enough.

Thankfully my car at the time had an awesome trunk, so everything just
barely fit after the bungee cords came out. I can't believe we didn't
get pulled over that night.

But of course, I'm forgetting about the bed frame. "Oh, I'll just hold
it to my chest while you're driving!" Keep in mind JR is like 5ft.
nothing and this thing was wider than me. But nevertheless, somehow
she did it.

And you know what? The insane thing is, we went to a rehearsal space
called The Vault (RIP) before doing the show, so we somehow managed to
load all that gear, unload it for the rehearsal, load it back into my
card, unload it again for the show, then load it back up for a final
time on the way home. I can't even remember how we did that. And we
did it on time for the show... sort of. Let me explain:

Rehearsal went about as well as can be expected, just experimenting
and getting an idea of what challenges might arise, then we booked it
to the venue because we were supposed to go on in like ten minutes
from when we left The Vault. Come to find out, the "noise" portion of
this show was still at least a half hour away because the shitty nu
metal/hard rock bands weren't done yet. There was a lot of confusion
about who was going on and when; there was a pile of our gear and
everyone else's gear clogging up a wall near the entrance; the doorman
kept asking for our IDs despite us clearly bringing shit in and out...
I think we were supposed to go on at like 9 or 10pm: we ended up going
at 2am. Now I wasn't the one to organize this thing so that could've
been down to any number of factors, but knowing now how much of a
dickhead the booker is, well, I'm inclined to believe he was the one
to blame for dropping the ball.

Anyways, the first show's venue was at a pub & grill called The Wisco.
Aside from us that night, it featured MIDWASTE, a delay and tape-heavy
sort of noise drone duo; VROTL, a one man drum machine black
metal/jazz outfit; HIDEOUS REPLICA, a project mostly fronted by Dan
Hintz (of ALIEN FARM, HUNGRY GHOST, etc.), notorious for minimal yet
loud setups of field recordings played through amps; and WHSKY
JANETOR, a bizarre St. Louis(?) duo of two girls doing awkward,
confrontational and oddly comedic fever dream dance pop.

To the best of my knowledge, no footage of either of our sets exists,
but you can see me in VROTL's set
here..
I'm the guy with the white Nuit Noire backpatch saying dumb shit like
"I am one hundred and ten percent erect!" You can also find HIDEOUS
REPLICA's full set
here and
clips of WHSKY JANETOR's set
here,
here,
and here.

Skipping ahead to our set, I first recall Ginger(?) of WHSKY JANETOR
lending me her keyboard stand, which I'll always be grateful for since
I probably scratched it up and she was totally cool with that (I had a
piece of metal shelving clamped onto the stand and would "play" the
shelving by dragging the flat side of a mic'd hand saw across it).
Basically I was in the back with the shelving, a tape loop and some
electronics going through the bar's PA system; JR did her thing
through the amp out in front, with the full length mirror set
ominously along the left wall. I should also mention JR's eyes lit up
when she first saw the bed frame, so of course she had to use that for
the live set as well: I believe it was set up along the opposite wall,
in such a way that she could've jumped on it if she wanted (and she
probably did when I wasn't looking).

We're both kind of doing our own thing at the same time, slowly
building to a point where there's just this constant drone. I come up
with a mic at one point and do some very cringe-inducing "vocals" and
reserved fake-fighting with the audience, but that was child's play
for JR: she had a mission this night, and that mission involved
breaking that mirror.

So when I waddle back to my mixer after my microphone freak-out, I
look up for but the briefest moment and see JR disrobing, wearing
nothing but dirty, silver panties and a novelty bra (like it had
plastic boobs on the outside of the bra proper). Note that JR is trans
so the only thing I was registering in those first few seconds was a
half-naked little boy with bags under his eyes moving like a zombie
without ever acknowledging my presence. I've seen far worse things on
the internet, but in real life it was still quite shocking, moreover
it was totally unexpected.

JR continues her zombie walk with a stone face until she's sitting
directly across from mirror. I snap out of my shell shock and just try
to make interesting noises for the next... eternity minutes, it seemed
like. All the while, JR is just coldly staring at the mirror, no more
than two feet from the crowd, no sledgehammer in sight. Then suddenly
she savagely whips into the mirror with her chain, mirror shards
everywhere, and proceeded to roll around said shards screaming all the
while. I think at some point I saw she was done and figured enough was
enough so I cut power to both our mixers and the show was over.
Thunderous applause greeted my throbbing ears as I surveyed the
situation: we were going to have to clean up all these fucking mirror
shards.

JR was of course bloody and I got a hug from Ginger, which really made
my night since I was fat, sweaty and shirtless by the end of it. Incidentally, the other member of WHSKY JANETOR (don't think I ever caught her name) was wearing a see-through black shirt thing, so that was also the night I saw my first real pair of tits. The
bar owner(?) came out with a broom and dustpan and IIRC the cleanup
actually went by pretty fast. There was a guy who came in a few
minutes before last call and played some horribly loud, shitty rap
music while we were cleaning, though.

So we're loading gear back into my car, which by now I'm an expert at,
and I'm looking at this damn bedframe like, fuck man, I don't want
to take this thing home with me.
JR says I should totally take it
with me, to which I reply "wait here for a minute." Keep in mind it's
super late at night by now so hardly anybody is on the streets. I
carry this big metal piece of shit over to some random business, put
it on the side of the building in an alley, and walk away. I can only
imagine what the employees thought when they found it the next day.
Also can only imagine what would've happened had there been police out
and about. I come back, tell JR what happens: she laughs, we leave.

I assume after the show I'd drop her off back at her house, but at the
time JR was apparently going though some heavy family shit. We still
topped off back at the house, she took out her gear, her amp, the
mirror (what was left of it), then- fuck, she brings out a god damned
bike. To be fair, she apologized profusely for the trouble and asked
with sincerity every time she piled a new piece of miscellany into my
car, so I can't really be mad. I drove her to the place she wanted to
be left off at, we said our goodbyes and I drove home, all the while
patting myself on the back for scheduling the following day off. Oh
yeah, this show was on a Wednesday, forgot to mention that.
Prime-fucking-time.

This was only the second "real" live show I had ever done, and the
craziest overall... until JR called me up again... but that story is
to be continued.

It's late and I need to work tomorrow. I'll try to get the second part
of this story out in a timely fashion. I also have a few photos and
such to upload yet.

I've seen both bedframe springs and broken mirrors used in noise sets.. Striations comes to mind for the bed springs. The one mirror I am thinking of was at the 517 Fest Lansing MI January 2008 but I don't recall the name of the group.. I think I have an LP they made and the sleeve was decorated with color xerox's of their genitals pressed the glass etc. I'm tempted to call the braking the mirror thing a cliche or trope or whatever.. I suppose there are worse noise tropes.

Table flip(s).
( cannot specifically remember one in particular, there are a few I believe )

The table collapse.
I think the guy was wearing a hat and yelling at the crowd.

Video would be great.

Speaking of table flips...

Also, GRAVHUND will never be booked again at that venue for trashing it. Literally.
