Well one could argue spending any money on music is a waste but at least with tangible formats you can try to resell them.. can't really do that with downloads.

Yep, I buy cheap / obscure records for samples, and also to insert into dj sets. Really like early spoken word records

For me, with vinyl therexe2x80x99s just too many variables: you have to pick the right turntable, right cartridge, right speed; decent speakers, decent amplifier; check for surface noise or scratches on used vinyl, check for jacket damage, check for all the original liners & shit... all to sit down and xe2x80x9crelaxxe2x80x9d to something thatxe2x80x99s only going to be 20-25 minutes tops before having to get back up and flip to the next side.

Plus theyxe2x80x99re huge and fragile when compared to CDs or tapes. Not to mention, the collectorxe2x80x99s circuit is vastly more competitive and popular for vinyl, which tends to mean more reissues for that format, while us xe2x80x9cplebsxe2x80x9d who cannot or will not buy records continue to get left in the dust. This is annoying for certain records that have never gotten a reissue on any other format.

Even the whole xe2x80x9cvinyl is the superior format because it inherently sounds betterxe2x80x9d argument is total hogwash. See above variables for starters: a good record means nothing if played on a shit setup. Furthermore, a lot of vinyl reissues, especially for metal, are now being mastered to mimic the older CD versions as much as possible, so whatxe2x80x99s the point? Finally, wexe2x80x99ve reached a point in digital formats where the quality of the recording can potentially be too high fidelity for us to hear (24bit/96kHz). If digital recordings can potentially have greater dynamic range than any analog format, and produce frequencies the human ear canxe2x80x99t even detect, then I say that makes vinylxe2x80x99s supposed fidelity irrelevant.

Now obviously this just isnxe2x80x99t my cup of tea: people born into vinyl will probably love the format partly because of all the nuisances I listed. I just canxe2x80x99t be assed with it anymore.

tl;dr screw vinyl

Most of the nuisances you listed don't really come into play with what I'm buying and why I'm buying it. Many of those records weren't and never will be released again on a different format and if i only bought for the cover then I like the larger size. Although I will say that turntables are a bit fiddly.

The cajun social music tape is pretty Damn good. (Did I already post this?)
There is one track where they are clinking metal and glass with an accordian back up and its noise!

Aside from space concerns I would have everyone of those records. nut

I do like records.. I don't think they are the best format for fidelity. I like to trot out this study as an example..

https://consumerist.com/2008/03/03/do-c ... er-cables/

Likewise most people can't really tell the difference between an mp3 and uncompressed audio etc.

I do think one of vinyl, tape and I guess any analogue format is that damage to one part of the recording surface does not prevent you from listening to what remains. For a CD if you get damage on the inner ring you won't beable to hear the rest of it. Given that there was a time when noise releases where often spraypainted you can be sure that will destroy the disc eventually. Spraypaint contains solvents FFS!

Also with CD and especially CDr's you have to worry about disc rot and depending on who made the disc it may start to delaminate at some point no matter what you do. CDr's use dye so that seems prone to some kind of degeneration over time.

Harddrives fail and even flash memory is not permanent. I know a well known noise guy who has gotten burned at least once by a failed harddrive. Apparently newer drives have adopted a new way to index the file locations that is prone to total loss of files whereas older systems allowed you to rebuild the index but took up more space. Personally I mostly use SSD drives because they are so much cheaper now and way faster. For anything mission critical I'd recommend backing up frequently and replacing your main work drive often.. at least every couple of years.

But I digress.. If I'm buying something solely to sample from and it's on CD I will buy the CD .. it more convenient. Even though I buy CD's I pretty much rip them to mp3's especially if I plan to listen to them regularily.
