Bandcamp has been bought by Epic Games

Post by Pigswill »

Kind of out of left field, but this news just dropped today:

Bandcamp is Joining Epic Games
I’m excited to announce that Bandcamp is joining Epic Games, who you may know as the makers of Fortnite and Unreal Engine, and champions for a fair and open Internet.

Bandcamp will keep operating as a standalone marketplace and music community, and I will continue to lead our team. The products and services you depend on aren’t going anywhere, we’ll continue to build Bandcamp around our artists-first revenue model (where artists net an average of 82% of every sale), you’ll still have the same control over how you offer your music, Bandcamp Fridays will continue as planned, and the Daily will keep highlighting the diverse, amazing music on the site. However, behind the scenes we’re working with Epic to expand internationally and push development forward across Bandcamp, from basics like our album pages, mobile apps, merch tools, payment system, and search and discovery features, to newer initiatives like our vinyl pressing and live streaming services.

Bandcamp Joining Epic Games to Support Fair, Open Platforms for Artists and Fans
Today, we are thrilled to announce that Bandcamp will become part of Epic Games. Bandcamp is an online music store and community where fans can discover, connect with, and directly support the independent musicians they love.

Fair and open platforms are critical to the future of the creator economy. Epic and Bandcamp share a mission of building the most artist friendly platform that enables creators to keep the majority of their hard-earned money. Bandcamp will play an important role in Epic’s vision to build out a creator marketplace ecosystem for content, technology, games, art, music and more.

Epic Games are 50% owned by Tencent, a Chinese multinational tech house who already have shares in Warners, Spotify and loads of Metaverse shit.

In my opinion, if a chinese company are pulling the strings, then its not going to be fair or open.

without regulation this is how I see the metaverse going

1. people outside it will appear as NPC's
2. you will be able to buy and / or flaunt that you've bought your privacy inside and out
3. but all our data will, in time, lose its anonymity
4. in the metaverse an NFT will prove your data is legit.
etc.

big brother isn't watching you

Yeah heard about this yesterday.. this could be a good thing if by allowing artist on bandcamp to opt into licensing their music to game developers and manage to pay better than Spotify or better yet more than iTunes. This isn't really a surprising move for Epic as they give away the unreal engine to developers but charge a percentage of what they make off of game sales. Also they have a marketplace for 3d assets to put in the engine so why not music as well.

Damn, over two hours? I'm going to have to find some time to watch this.

Tencent owns about 9% of Spotify, a service known for paying a pittance towards an artist for each play they get. And given Epic's description of using Bandcamp to create a "creator economy", especially in the wake of the Apple fallout, I think they're going to find a way to gut it and turn it into a part of a walled garden

it's about people using the NFT technology to fund pyramid schemes, and how that was a natural consequence of some of the insane ideas promoting it as a utopian idea, along with bitcoin. didn't watch it all. very f weird.

dunno if you get a NFT proving your digital data trail has not been tampered with. don't see why not? you just need data analytics good enough, right: this is a real big brother announcement! etc.

an NFT is just a blockchain that can't be copied.
Blockchain is a system of recording information in a way that makes it difficult or impossible to change, hack, or cheat the system
so it';s proof that your data analysis is as reliable as the people doing it... with the open secret caveat that you can bribe them haha.

I definitely think that the metaverse is being illegitametly sold / marketed as utopian, it being nothing of the sort. that fact alone should be cause for concern, but there's also going to be insane privacy issues with people basically migrating their entire reality to something which, in effect, is spying on us.

don't know what you mean by apple or walled garden.

he future looks pretty grim... all these new technologies aren't even about consolidating power, over nature or even anyone else. they're just about making being powerful more fun. i.e. more sadistic, more abusive. moreover, while I don't think the planet has rights, I do think that everyone has a right to enjoy the planet without choking on its ashes

I mean Gaia... obviously animals have rights. if not many for individual ones, then lots for a species. even if you think they're not sentient, feeling, conscious things, I really don't think we should wipe out species. I reckon all these bat shit billionaires feel the same for new toys haha. my Frankenstein has rights even if it doesn't feel
