I would have assumed it to be compatibility with military stuff to ease way into contracts, but disc speed is a good reason.

Probably that plus 3 generations removed. My best guess is I got them in early '96
which coincided with a major career change and I was exploring Buzzarounds,
ColorSounds and other germanium silliness after suddenly finding out there was a
thing outside of florescent lighting, corporate pipe dreams and performative staff meetings.
There was an engineer in Visual Products named Simon, from England, and he was very
much into '60s British FuzzBoxes. He could damn near dead-bug a 10-12 component fuzz faster
than some pick and place systems I had experienced.
Anyway, that scrap of paper has been tucked away for 20 odd years.
