ThisMachineKillsMusic released a video today about the history and impact of The Normal's song Warm Leatherette. Kind of a shameless plug since it contains a cover that she and I put together, but I think you guys will enjoy the video, especially considering all of the discussion about bad drivers

I think I first heard this for the first time around 2006 or so when I saw a reissue of the T.V.O.D. single at the CD shop. I love the sound of it. A couple of my favorite covers include the ones by Sleep Chamber and Laibach. Least favorites include Boyd Rice's because it's the laziest one out there and, at the opposite end, Foetus's version because it's so over the top and cheesy

for multiple reasons..

xe2x80x98Thirteen to Centaurusxe2x80x99, directed by Peter Potter, is an adaptation of J.G. Ballardxe2x80x99s 1962 short story of that name, produced as part of the BBCxe2x80x99s Out of the Unknown series of science-fiction dramatisations. But at that time film and television was just not capable of delivering the frisson that the best SF literature provided (it would be arguably six years into the future before that could occur, with the dawn of Kubrickxe2x80x99s 2001), and Ballardxe2x80x99s suave imagination was clearly leaps and bounds ahead xe2x80x94 as this adaptation demonstrates.

In Ballardxe2x80x99s story, we are introduced to a space station with a crew of thirteen, including the 16-year-old wunderkind, Abel, a boy given to questioning every facet of his existence. Abel is aware that therexe2x80x99s something beyond the limits of his perception, some vital key of knowledge that will explode the received worldview controlling life on the station. Yet every time hexe2x80x99s on the verge of a cognitive breakthrough, his logic blurs and fades, held back by the xe2x80x98conditioningxe2x80x99 that each crew member must undergo. This involves being subjected to xe2x80x98subsonicxe2x80x99 instruction xe2x80x94 brainwashing xe2x80x94 as the crew are kept in stasis, their minds preoccupied purely with the present and the working ritual of maintaining the station. Their conditioning ensures that the past, and indeed the future, is forever out of reach.

Yet Abel perseveres, conducting various experiments. He tells the onboard psychologist, Dr Francis, that hexe2x80x99s worked out the station is actually revolving, but he just canxe2x80x99t make that final mental leap to determine what that actually means as xe2x80x98his mind always fogged at a question like that, as the conditioning blocks fell like bulkheads across his thought trains (logic was a dangerous tool at the Station).xe2x80x99
