'''Industrial''' is a genre of experimental music formed in the early to mid 1970s. Although it was never precisely defined, some of its characteristics included the use of non-musical sound, electronic noise and tape manipulations which were used to create anything from industrial rhythms to abstract noise or dark atmospheres. This style was pioneered by [[Throbbing Gristle]], [[SPK]], Cabaret Voltaire, and other bands somehow involved with the label Industrial Records from the UK. They often made use of self-made electronic devices, synthesizers, improvised instruments, sound collage/cut-ups and various sound effects.

During the 80s many of the early industrial groups steered into a more accessible (even commercial) direction, but the techniques, sound and aesthetics laid the base and influenced the later formation of [[Noise]], [[Power Electronics]] and even [[Dark Ambient]].

'''Throbbing Gristle''' were an experimental music group from the UK. They became pioneers of [[Industrial]] music, whose name is generally associated with their label, Industrial Records. The band formed in 1975, evolving from a performance art group called COUM Transmissions, which had been around since 1969.
