History
Chav Stabber was a project by Scottish noise and video artist, Thomas Simon Japp, that was active between 2008 and 2011.

Originally started under the name Spakka in 2006, the project evolved from glitchy ambience into experimental noise and extreme volume assaults.

Style
Harsh, dynamic and violent sonic brutality, through to minimalist drone and dark ambient. Layers of synths, controlled feedback, contact mic scraping, extended vocal techniques and home-made instruments/effects, typically multi-tracked live and then edited further in Cubase. Some albums veered towards HNW, but the majority involves spastic movement, cut-ups and pushing frequencies to the point of physical sensation.

Releases
Chav Stabber produced around 50 albums and numerous contributions to splits, collabs and compilations over the course of 2-3 years. The vast majority of material was released on the Australian netlabel, Smell the Stench, which no longer appears to be active outside of Bandcamp. I briefly ran the label before my 'absence'.

With its demise, many of the Chav Stabber releases no longer appear to be publicly available and so I'll be releasing some from my own label, Opulent Lunch Recordings, in various formats over the coming year.

The Chav Stabber Discogs is in the process of being updated at the moment. Albums and EP's are being cataloged, and new material will be added as it's released, as well any any new releases from current or future projects.

Termination of Project
*1. Computer got hacked and infected with malware, so I thought I had lost everything.
*2. Not to put too fine a point on it, I went mental. Long story. Largely irrelevant.

Current Projects
At the moment, I have three active projects exploring different areas of noise. All involve similar processes in creating source material, but are drastically different when it comes to composition and performance.

Japsi focuses on creating a perverted 'noise pop', mixing stark and repetitive beats with harsh textures in a conventional song-like structure. It started out as a Deep Internet experiment, but the whole sub-genre bored me to tears and so I decide to get experimental with noise and structure.

Understand David focuses on straight-up noise in all its various forms, e.g. HNW, tape noise, guitar noise, loops, junk percussion, etc. Aimed less at the extremities of Chav Stabber and more at old-school, 80's and early 90's inspired lo-fi recordings.

The Oceanic produces nothing but HNW in all of its various forms.
DIY Tape/CD-R & Netlabel
It's almost expected for a noise artist to have their own label or imprint, so I'd hate to be anything less than conventional...

Opulent Lunch Recordings is my own label for releasing material from Chav Stabber, as well as all of my other noise/experimental projects. Nobody gives a shit about my little netlabel, I know; just consider it a form of personal organization and administration. It'll only be downloads at first, but I'll be making tapes and CD-R's available in coming months - specifically a load of unreleased Chav Stabber material, as well as splits with real-world artists.

If you'd like to release on my label, do a split or collaborate in some way then just hit me up via the contacts below.
Ultimate Bastard are a grindcore/digigrind duo from Glasgow, Scotland. Formed as part of the original Cowcore genre, their sound evolved into a unique combination of extreme metal, creative sampling and electronica, taking influence from everyone from Scorn to Agoraphobic Nosebleed.

Ultimate Bastard are one of the original Cowcore acts, along with Meat Ears, Qumph and others, who have since denied their involvement, and even claimed to have invented the genre as a joke. The duo attempted to distance themselves as their own sound developed, along with their fanbase and local support. Claims of "selling out" have been made by former friends of Andy and Doogzy, some of whom ended up hospitalized due to Andy's notorious love of violence.

This tendency towards transgression has led to many problems for the pair, with prison sentences and restraining orders typically leading to years between releases. There have been no releases for the last three years, however Andy Pubes is active on social media, leading some to believe that new material may be on the horizon.

History
Cowcore is a sub-genre of noisecore, which began in the early to mid-1990's in Glasgow, Scotland. Born in the tape-trading and DIY recording scene, Cowcore was an underground phenomenon which went on to influence many bands in the following years with it's mix of metal, freeform jazz and noise. Live shows were rare, due to the level of violence and drug use which was commonplace during the early days, but a handful of bootlegs exist and were recovered after the death of Stevie Dwyer in 2019.

By 1996, Cowcore had come to dominate the tape-trade and basement party scenes with most bands being barred from conventional venues such as the Cathouse and Glasgow Barfly for acts of public masturbation, fire starting and (allegedly) showing execution videos during their performances. Gag Reflex and The Sidney Divine Fanclub were both arrested for indecent exposure and assaulting a police officer on the Renfrew Ferry during a performance of Monkey Fuck which signaled the beginning of the end of the Cowcore scene.

Influence
Various underground magazines and tape traders who supported Cowcore during it's existence, pointed out similarities between the Cowcore sound and the genre which became known as math metal. It has been suggested that math metal is the equivalent of Cowcore-lite since it takes away much of the complexity and brutality of Cowcore itself while still remaining unintelligible to the outsider. Members of Psyopus and The Dillinger Escape Plan have made passing reference to Cowcore in interviews, but the current legal status of the genre prevents it from being publicized further in media.

Controversies
In recent years, certain former members of the Cowcore scene have attempted to deny that it even existed in the first place. The lyrical content, violent performances and controversial video projections shown during live shows led to the entire genre as being viewed with disdain by the public, and ignored by the media. This has caused many former Cowcore band members to experience difficulty in finding employment, and in some cases even become social pariahs.

Members of various bands are currently incarcerated for crimes ranging from drug trafficking to 1st degree murder. Rumours abound of bootleg recordings, made in prison by a handful of artists but these have never seen the light of day, leading many to believe that it's a joke started out by ex-Cowcore progenitor, Jimmy Kyle. This is unlikely though, since Kyle died several years ago after a wardrobe feel on top of him in his house while trying to get a tenner bag from the top of it.

Meat Ears, Ultimate Bastard and Qumph are among the former Cowcore bands to have gone public in their denial. They have claimed that no such scene existed, but have failed to comment on their inclusion on the "People Don't Like It When You Call Them Stupid" compilation, or their appearance in VHS recordings and photos from the early 90's. While understandable, given the controversial nature of the genre, their continued denial and claims that the whole thing was a joke that they made up themselves simply are not backed up by the evidence.

End Of The Genre
In February 1997, Meat Ears and Dirty Orange played their last show at St John Bosco's Church Hall, and then announced that they were splitting. At the end of the performance equipment was smashed, tapes were burned and the bands were charged with arson, endangering the public and abusive & threatening behaviour. No local venues would allow gigs, no one would allow bands to play in their homes and Cowcore seemed to fade away with little or no fanfare. By mid-97, the West Coast scene was silent and the East Coast crews from Edinburgh fared no better after members of Anus Podger and Salt n' Shake were jailed for heroin possession.

Comeback
During 2008, members of various Cowcore bands got together to consider restarting some of the acts and bringing Cowcore into the present day. Myspace profiles were set up, Bovine Intervention Records was restarted after Danny Oates was released from prison, but it was decided that a false start had been made and that some of the original members would be needed to make it happen.

In early 2009, Stevie Dwyer, original frontman of Sodomy Mince, returned from the USA and announced that Bovine Intervention Records would be releasing new albums from many of the original acts in the upcoming year. The label also announced that it would be opening its studios again for old and new Cowcore bands, and that physical releases would be made available in the future.

Unfortunately, drug addiction and legal issues prevented any progress and so Bovine Intervention Records lay dormant. The death of Dwyer in 2019 led to the discovery of dozens of tapes, recorded at rehearsals in studios like Chem19 and live shows at various house parties. As directed in Dwyer's will, all Bovine Intervention material was passed on to John Miller, the producer responsible for the demos and the compilation of previous releases. Miller subsequently set up a Bandcamp and Soundcloud for the label, where he continues to re-release material and to publish the unreleased tapes from Dywer's estate.

Understand David is the noise project of Simon Japp, formerly known as Chav Stabber.

The project is focused on continuing explorations into the extremities of human perception, and their sonic representation. Only one album has been released so far, but there is material that ranges from guitar noise and power electronics, to dark ambient and drone-based soundscapes that have still to come. Understand David will involve exploring all styles of noise, mixing and matching as we go and producing a fresh take on the old sounds.

There is no greater purpose, politics or manifesto involved. This is noise, for the sake of noise.
Opulent Lunch Recordings is the DIY label of Simon Japp, a.k.a. Chav Stabber, Understand David and The Oceanic. The label was created to release and re-issue material by my various projects, as a means of managing and curating my discography. Other artists may end up being released in future, but for the moment it's nothing more than a micro-label for my own projects.

I briefly ran the label before my 'absence' With its demise, many of the Chav Stabber releases are no longer publicly available and so I'll be releasing some from my own label, Opulent Lunch Recordings, in various formats over the coming year.

Discogs is in the process of being updated at the moment. Albums and EP's are being cataloged, and new material will be added as it's released.

Style
Understand David is the noise project of Simon Japp, formerly known as Chav Stabber.

The project is focused on continuing explorations into the extremities of human perception, and their sonic representation. Only one album has been released so far, but there is material that ranges from guitar noise and power electronics, to dark ambient and drone-based soundscapes that have still to come. Understand David will involve exploring all styles of noise, mixing and matching as we go and producing a fresh take on the old sounds.

There is no greater purpose, politics or manifesto involved. This is noise, for the sake of noise.
