NO SIGNAL, NO NOISE ...

"Noise is never enough. Always too much." (Paul Hegarty)

"All this is noise: it fucks up your signal" (Thomas Pynchon)

ORiFiCE (formerly „Atmen im Atom“) is an experimental electronic noise project based in Germany. It released its works at different sublabels of HERBAL INTERNATIONAL in Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur), above all at ATTENUATION CIRCUIT in Germany (Augsburg), at TimTimmTonTraeger in Germany (Hamburg), at MOTOK in the Netherlands (Enschede), at RDCRECORDS in Japan (Tokyo) and soon at 16 SHOTS PER MINUTE in Japan (Niigata): In the majority of cases synthesizer and analog gear improvisations done by hand without any post-production.

Live cooperations together with KNARK ESION (Augsburg/Germany) and JAVA DELLE (Hamburg/Germany).

Beyond ORiFiCE is curating "ROLLATOR SERIES" at ATTENUATION CIRCUIT label:

"With the Rollator Series, attenuation circuit provides a forum for noise as an art form related to music, but not necessarily part of it. To underline this idea of a comprehensive “noise art,” the Rollator Series features artists who also create their own cover art, or work in close collaboration with the visual artists who create the covers.

The sounds of the albums are widely spread within the area of noise, aiming to present the whole range of possibilities of “noise” as a field of creative research. Like attenuation circuit in general, the Rollator Series is aimed at bringing together artists from the immediate surroundings of the label, mainly from Germany, with noise artists from all over the world.

Rollator Series is aimed at presenting a wide range of different visual as well as acoustic styles, from abstract paintings to digital art to collage. To showcase the artwork along with the music, the CD-Rs come in a highly limited edition of 20 copies with high-quality print covers. After the physical edition is sold out, each release remains available as a free download."

YEAH I KNOW IT SUCKS (2013-8-1) to it:

"Than we have Orifice that chooses to satisfy the ears with soft lofi tones that seems to be singing a harmonious song of positive sadness. In the depth of it all we can hear something that could have been the sound of a train sliding over its tracks. A bizarre looking pretty sound makes its way on top of the warmth that is provided hear with a piss taking strangeness to it. When it disappears from wherever it came from the tones seems to start to inhale and exhale with life. Another friendly sound of movement comes in to say hi to the lovers of experimental music that took the time to sink in this compilation. Without any further warning this friendly sounding sound attaches itself to your brain and squeezes, harder and harder until it pops!"

Sediment on: ORiFiCE vs. EXEDO (2013, Attenuation Circuit, ACLK 1001)

Front1.jpg

„Two full-size transparent CDs, yet only the 3 inches in the centre are playable – their special design enhances the graphic opulence of this series, where collaborations of two artists each come in package with original drawings by Fabian Otto. The first release confronts different takes on noise by ORiFiCE and Exedo. If noise is the other of music, then ORiFiCE plays out their contrast to full effect: each of the first three pieces here starts with lush, krautrock/ambient-style synth cords, only to be superseded more or less completely by noise textures far from the all-out hiss and distortion of HNW practitioners. Instead these ‚noises‘ have a grainy, textural quality, they sound like pebbles being rubbed against each other or objects bursting in a fire. The fact that they work together with the more traditionelly musical aspects of the tracks only highlights their beauty. In the fourth and final piece by ORiFiCE, though, we hear the harsher side of the noise music spectrum ...“

KATARAKT (2013, Attenuation Circuit, Rollator Series, ACRS-1001)

Untitled-scanned-01.jpg

"The Rollator Series is a new imprint on Attenuation Circuit dedicated especially to noise art and curated by noisician ORiFiCE who sets the standard for the series with his album 'Katarakt', his third on Attenuation Circuit. According to the noise artist Daniel Menche, cataracts or waterfalls even gave the ancient Egyptians and native Americans tinnitus in a time many believe was much quieter than ours. The sounds on 'Katarakt' are much less noisy than a real waterfall, though - a colourful palette of synthesized sounds in attractive forms of decay in contrast to white noise only attainable in theory. ORiFiCE uses all the piercing frequencies, distortion and overdriven synths that are staples of harsh noise, but he uses them in a way that still leaves individual sound sources recognizable. Instead of the massive layerings of much Japanese-style noise, here is a noise music that delights in textural richness to the point that it could almost be called 'kraut-noise' while still offering blissfully noisy abandon when played at high volume. Another delightful aspect of the album is that ORiFiCE's approach is pretty irreverential and far from straight-faced nihilist posturing of many noisicians. A great example of this are the almost clean keyboard chords he sometimes throws in after some silence between bursts of full-on distortion and which feel almost shocking in the context of the noise genre for their willful cheesyness."

"ORIFICE – Katarakt by RaF – 18. April 2013

YEAH I KNOW IT SUCKS (2014-2-23) to it:

"One release, One Artist and five steps.

1. Like the soundtrack for a budget cult movie, this work starts safely in a lo-fi format. When you start to believe it’s just someone playing some tones on a chinese instrument, the real purpose of this track comes in. The ears are filled with scraping noises that rinse the ears in a deaf making way. The pressure is on and the only thing reasonable to do is try to focus and find the original calmed music that hides somewhere in the far background. A nasty and crunchy stream of lo-fi noise attacks more drastically and will probably leave the listener with a slight bit of pain.

2. Different noises that come across as ambulance sirens, old school modems and a maniac glitching it all up together like a modern spaced out torturous Beethoven, is what my ears are registering. Perhaps it’s something else, but as the sounds are carving deep internal cuts in my braintissue, it’s basically not a very thrustworthy description.

3. Am I deaf? Or are the audio cables unplugged? A sudden sound pressure proofs me wrong as a digital balloon is squeezing the air out its non existing lungs. Noise erupts that vibrates the place up as if the sound activity of a household hover is mixed with an wonky aircraft engine, heard through cheap intercom speakers. Regarding what the actual sounds are, it will definitely leaves the ears ringing for a couple of hours.

4. The artist plays a short-lived set of keys on a cheap keyboard. The rest is painstakingly painful as if ORiFiCE had slammed a nasty looking knife in the circuits of the poor music tool and the listeners ears are treated with the screams of help of the dying instrument. I’m not sure who suffers the most, but it’s definitely able to do some good old permanent damage.

5. Like the previous 4 steps, the artist of the work seem to enjoy giving false hope at each beginning . With the last and final step ORiFiCE tickles softly some sounds in the ears. It’s as the artist is checking if we are still able to register sound with our ears. And when the answer is yes, simply bombard us with a menacing noise that will keep haunting the ears until the very end.

Are you in the mood to go and drown in the rabbit-hole, than this might be something to check out." <KN>

ORiFiCE vs. elektrojudas, Signal Kitchen - Remixes (2012, Attenuation Circuit ACP-1002)

Electro.jpeg

"'Signal Kitchen' by ORiFiCE, the first full-on improvised noise album on Attenuation Circuit, was reworked by elektrojudas into a hybrid between danceable EBM, Atari Teenage Riot-style electropunk, and a sreeching, bubbling synthesizer-meets-beatbox-freakout second only (if at all) to Pierre Henry's 'Messe pour le temps présent'. The rhythmic structures added by elektrojudas succeed in not taming ORiFiCE's 'all hands barred' approach, but actually accentuating it and possibly even introducing technoheads to the pleasure of sheer noise."

B.M.T.G. on: "V.A., IMPEDANCE" (Attenuation Circuit - Label Compilation, 2012, ACS 1003)

Impedance back2.jpeg

Website of label: www.attenuationcircuit.de

Vital Weekly No. 834 to it:

"A label compilation introducing the artists on the label so far, as well as a bunch of new artists which will find their way onto the roster, that's what we find on 'Impedance' by Germany's Attentuation Circuit. Those new names are Niku Senpuki, Yield and Here Be Monsters, although the latter is a new name for Zan Hoffman, who appeared on the label as Krynge. The others are Deep, Doc Wor Mirran, Aalfang Mit Pferdekopf, Esa Ruoho, Elektrojudas, B*Tong, Artifical Memory Trace, Orifice, Sustained Development, Mystified and Emerge, the project of the labelboss himself. Fourteen pieces by fourteen bands in total, and atmospheric music is what is served here. From the more field recordings madness of Here Be Monsters, to the noise of Orifice, the rock of Doc Wor Mirran and the techno of Elektrojudas. In between we have a whole bunch of musicians that doodle with the notion of drone music. The funniest piece is by Aalfang Mit Pferdekopf, who poke fun at Keith Emerson with a whole bunch of monotron sounds. Nice enough introduction, I'd say."

Bad Alchemy No. 74 to it:

BLACK Onlinemagazin to it:

PINKK LLULLABIES (2012, Attenuation Circuit ACR-1015)

Pinkk.jpg

"At twice the lenght of its 30-minute predecessor 'Signal Kitchen' (ACR 1002), this latest album by noise artist Orifice offers some surprisingly gentle moments amangst its 13 tracks of wavetable-synth improvisations. Orifice frequently indulges in classical harmonies with a friendly analogue synth sound, only to crush them between grainy shards of oscillators in overdrive. The resulting tensions make it possible to listen out for interesting details instead of just enjoying the sheer sonic force of the noisier parts.

Given the fact that only one instrument is used, the improvisations span a surprising variety of timbres. The sinewave-flavoured sounds of the synthesizer, recorded in a way that deliberately preserves some imperfections of the signal, sometimes resembles guitar feedback, while the repeated use of sounds with a very short attack suggests the idea of a garage-style glockenspiel. Another interesting aspect is the use of repetitive structures, noisy loops that only change rather gradually. Track 9, sounding somewhat like Darth Vader in mortual combat with a heavy-duty vacuum cleaner, is a wonderful example of this rather minimalist approch.

Vital Weekly No. 825 to it:

"Expanding twice in length to its predecessor 'Signal Kitchen' (see Vital Weekly 800), 'Pinkk Llullabies' offers again 'wavetable-synth improvisation' by Burkhard Jaeger. This time there is no mentioning of 'no editing, no overdubs, no mastering or any post-production', but surely that's the case too here. At least it sounds like it. Quite noisy stuff here again, and while the sound is better than on the previous release, the actual content, which is of course what its all about is not better. Thirteen pieces here, shorter than before, but still feedback like noise like stuff. Editing, dubbing and producing are all sadly missed here again."

"Orifice – Pinkk Llullabies

6. April 2012 | Autor: RaF

Tracklisting: 1. – 13. untitled

VÖ: 2012 Label: Attentuation Circuit

Genre: Noise, HNW Format: CD-R

Bad Alchemy No. 73 to it:

SIGNAL KITCHEN (2011, Attenuation Circuit ACR-1002)

R-3085629-1315041965.jpeg

"After several releases on international noise labels, German noisician Orifice introduces fully-fledged noise art to the Attenuation Circuit roster. Two lo-fi improvisation tracks generated March/April 2011 with the only help of analog gear (mainly semi-modular synth-knobbing) on a kitchen table boil sawtooth signals down to noise. No editing, no overdubs, no mastering or any post-production result in a sound that has a very tangible quality, especially on the first track. The direct impact of energy and intensity remains palpable in the colliding textures of noise and signals.

Coming in a delicately water-coloured package reminiscent of Japanese calligraphy, the sound on this short (28-minute) album does not, however, share the negativist philosophy of Japanese noise music, but rather celebrates noise as a joyous form of expression, a vital playfulness articulated through high volume and ecstatic human-machine interfacing: Orifice’s credo “Without signal, no noise” sums up the fundamental listening experience that, beyond a certain threshold level of intensity, the boundaries between musical signal and musical noise become meaningless, and this experience is not restricted to the genre explicitly referred to as ‘noise’, but can be encountered in musics as different as The Stooges’ ‘Fun House’ or free jazz powerplay. Orifice’s approach to improvisation seems related to all of these."

Website of Label: www.attenuationcircuit.de

Vital Weekly No. 800 to it:

"If something has 'no editing, no overdubs, no mastering or any post-production' and is labelled 'noise', then I certainly raise an eyebrow. Two tracks, sixteen and twelve minutes, which perhaps explains my suspicion further. German noise maker Orifice uses analog gear ('mainly semi-modular synth-knobbing') and its sounds like grinding teeth. There is something about the recording which is odd, like it has been recorded with some cheap microphones in front of speakers, rather than using the line out of the mixing board. He apparently doesn't share 'the negativist philosophy of Japanese noise music' (who said it was negative?). The first, longest, piece didn't anything at all for me, but the second was alright, not great either, but it comes without the overall distortion at the beginning, and has a spacious cosmic like sound to it, before leaping back into distortion. Now editing, overdubbing and post-producing could have made a difference, I thought."

ATOM HEART NOISE III (2009, as „Atmen im Atom“, Why Not Ltd No. 21 (Sublabel of HERBAL INTERNATIONAL))

00021AIA.jpeg

Vital Weekly No. 678 to it:

"The art work for this is an A4 photocopied sheet wrapped around a CDR. If you folded the sheet so as to insert it in a jewel case then the cover would be the wrong way around. Doris Boeker gets the credit for this, the text also has the caution that the CDr contains extreme Frequencies and unexpected Dynamic Processes. Well it (Track 1) starts in the bass - with a bubbling sounds (custard?) then slowly and predictably moves up the spectrum. Track two is whistles and hisses and crashes with reverb - as opposed to rhubarb. The other tracks continue in this industrial vein - with the occasional high pitched noises but never more than 22khz (which would be something?) Not that its particularly relevant but the worst/best thing on Audio CDs is fairly fixed high DC offsets - which can in some cases burn out speakers."
