Scarlet Death

Scarlet Death is a noise musician, performance artist, and community organizer based in Seattle, Washington. Active since the early 2000s, Scarlet Death blends harsh noise, experimental sound design, and narrative-driven projects with themes of technology, propaganda, and post-scarcity economics.

Early life and background

Scarlet Death was born in Columbia, MD, and began making music in Hendersonville, TN in the early 2000s under aliases including R3v0 and Say No More Tongues. They later moved to Seattle, WA in 2017 after a brief period of homelessness. In the 2000s, they founded Black Flower Music, a netlabel, podcast, and private torrent site connecting Soulseek communities and Tonberry Torrents participants (active roughly 2003–2013). They studied Public Relations at Middle Tennessee State University, hosted the radio show Soundwave Tsunami on WMTS 88.3 FM, and organized the campus anime convention Adacon.

Noise Music Discord

In 2017, Scarlet Death founded the Noise Music Discord server, later expanded into the Noise Discord label. The server aimed to recapture the community spirit of early Soulseek noise rooms and has since become a hub for noise musicians worldwide. Scarlet Death has described the server as both a creative outlet and a form of exposure therapy, incorporating themes of abandonment and trolling into their practice.

Musical projects

Scarlet Death began producing in 2001–2002 (initially with FruityLoops 3.x). After relocating to Seattle in 2017, they co-founded Queen Antifa with collaborators including Lauren Croney and Squidlarkin, performing screamed vocals over synth-driven noise. Solo work under Scarlet Death emphasizes intensity and authenticity, contrasting with earlier experimental projects such as SNMT.

Recent releases include singles Giga Passoid and Audio Danmaku (2024), alongside AI-generated soundtracks for the deathOS project, notably Void Witch OST 2: Prima Materia Collection. Giga Passoid was released September 13, 2024.

Concepts and philosophy

Scarlet Death integrates AI, storytelling, xenoeconomics, and cryptographic systems into noise music—framing sound as weapon and propaganda. They describe noise itself as an act of trolling, embracing its disruptive qualities while critiquing the limitations of contemporary online communities compared to early 2000s forums and trackers.

Influences

Scarlet Death has cited a wide range of artistic, philosophical, and cultural inspirations, including:

Philosophical

  • Gilles Deleuze – philosophy of difference and repetition
  • Nick Land – accelerationist theory and cybernetic critique

Musical

  • Masonna – Japanese noise performance intensity
  • Krzysztof Penderecki – avant-garde orchestral composition
  • John Cage – experimental composition and chance operations

Film and visual art

  • Sion Sono – Japanese filmmaker known for surreal and transgressive cinema
  • Takashi Miike – Japanese filmmaker noted for extreme and prolific output
  • Shintaro Kago – manga artist associated with ero guro and grotesque surrealism
  • Kenji Siratori – cyberpunk novelist and digital artist

Future projects

Scarlet Death is developing the lore-driven deathOS agentic operating system, a compute cluster and zkEVM foundation for immersive environments. Building on this, they are also working on the Void Witch hyperfiction AI project, envisioned as the basis for a military space opera franchise that blends interactive storytelling, noise aesthetics, and agentic systems. Additional planned initiatives include federated communities for harsh noise and cybergrind, Dolby Atmos/Vision experiments, and “qualia” studies to expand sensory experiences via her company, Masocore LLC
