Substrata. is an international experimental music/sound art label and research platform based in Mexico City curated and run by the Mexican researcher and activist Alfredo Gallardo.

Founded in the spring 2015, Substrata's approach to music and sound art management comes from a non-adaptative ethic that leads to the publishing of adventourous experimental artists that their oeuvre borders unclassificable music but explores sonorities in contemporary music such as contemporary composition, sound art, electroacoustic music, minimalism, noise, drone, ambient, free improv, and also artists whose work makes use of new media, and digital supports expanding the languajes of experimental music.

Under the focus into media archaeology the label works as an hybrid project taking form into a traditional record label publishing in such compact disc, cassette, vinyl, and also unique pieces and works also as net-label and blog.

Substrata. periodically publish STRAIN, publication that focus on contemporary art manifestations, critical theory, media archaeology and culture in relationship with sonic phenomena. The platform also organizes annually the contemporary sound art, critical theory, and acoustic image cycle SUSTAIN in which artists from all over the world and Mexico takes part in a kind of anti-festival in which concerts, urban interventions, radio interventions, conferences, lectures, performances among other activities takes place.

Substrata. collaborates with artists, curators, collectives, institutions, museums and galleries in order to open spaces for the experimental sound arts in Mexico and Latin America creating the right conditions for this arts to dialogue with other disciplines such as audio-visual arts and critical theory.
